The London fix: why a benchmark matters.

The purpose of a common reference rate, and why a particular moment in the trading day deserves context.

A shared reference point

A benchmark lets different participants refer to the same rate. WMR publishes FX benchmarks, including the London 4pm closing spot rates.

The useful starting point is their role: they provide a common reference for valuation and transactions. A benchmark is not a prediction of where a currency will go next.

Read the clock as well as the chart

The channel’s explainer introduces the London fix and the activity around a widely used reference time. It is a reminder that price movement can reflect how a market is organised, not just a change in someone’s economic view.

Go to the methodology

For a benchmark’s calculation rules and coverage, use the administrator’s current documentation. A short explainer is an introduction, not a substitute for that methodology.
