US retail sales

A dollar value of sales is not the same thing as a volume of consumption.

Start with coverage

The Census Bureau’s retail trade programmes measure activity across retail businesses and food services. The release is not a complete measure of every form of household spending. Name the aggregate being used and check which categories it includes before extending the conclusion to the whole consumer economy.

02

Value and volume are different

The familiar advance sales estimates are adjusted for seasonal, holiday and trading-day variation, but not for price changes. Higher sales values can therefore reflect quantities, prices or a mixture. This distinction matters especially when price changes are large in a particular category.

03

Read the category detail

An aggregate can hide offsetting movements. A concentrated change in one category does not necessarily describe the breadth of spending. When a commentary uses an exclusion-based grouping, check its definition and whether the comparison is consistent across months.

04

Keep estimates and revisions together

Early readings trade completeness for timeliness. Later information and revisions can alter the picture. Use the official release and its technical notes to distinguish the new observation from changes to earlier estimates, rather than comparing screenshots taken from different vintages.

HYPOTHETICAL / A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

More revenue without more units

A hypothetical retailer sells 100 items at $10, then sells the same 100 items at $11. Revenue rises from $1,000 to $1,100, or 10%, while unit volume does not change. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a claim about any actual retail category.

A QUICK CHECK

A retailer sells the same 100 items at a price 10% higher. What can revenue alone establish?
